Mellow Drama Katharine Mulherin Contemporary Art Projects, 1080 Queen St W, Toronto kmartprojects.com January 9 - February 1 2004 Opening Fri Jan 9 2004, 710 pm Organized by Cecilia Berkovic Jo-Anne Balcaen Jordan Sonenberg Simone Moir Instant Coffee Chris Grismer & Broken Social Scene Cecilia Berkovic mell·ow· dra·ma 1. A drama, such as a play, film, or television program, characterized by exaggerated emotions, stereotypical characters, and interpersonal conflicts. 2. Formerly, a kind of drama having a musical accompaniment to intensify the effect of certain scenes. Now, a drama abounding in romantic sentiment and agonizing situations, with a musical accompaniment only in parts which are especially thrilling or pathetic. Mellow Drama is an examination of love and the dynamic it creates in interpersonal relationships. Itıs a show for half-hearted romantics and lovesick fools alike. It celebrates crushes that quicken the pulse while at the same time lamenting love's loss. It understands the anticipation of a first kiss and empathizes with its demise: the dwindling of desire. The works in this show are inspired by awkward social situations, the ubiquitous love song and common narratives that use love as a major storyline. By investigating its many forms < unrequited, lost, new, secret, hidden, true < the artists attempt to create new possibilities: plot twists for the age old Olove storyı.
Resembling a party-like setting, Mellow Drama serves as a site for mini
dramas to unfold. So come on by, spin a 45, drink in the love and wait to
see if the emotional hangover sets in.
